Photo Shoot Sneak Peak

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

We are here, just very busy. Four weddings currently left this year, and a few photoshoots and other events are keeping us extremely busy. We are also trying to change servers which has proven to be a more difficult that originally thought task. Here’s a fabulous photo that leaves much to the imagination as to what we’ve created. We’ll share the detail shots a little later on! Thanks ENV Photography.

August 20: Candice + Brant

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Candice and Brant were married out in Fort Saskatchewan at the Our Lady of the Angels Catholic church. A beautiful white aisle runner, with four little arrangements adorned the aisles with two beautiful big arrangements at the front of the church.

She looked absolutely stunning in her gown, with a beautiful bouquet from the fabulous Studio Bloom.

The reception was held at the St. Michaels Heritage Hall, it is a beautiful little hall with the yummiest perogies I have had in a long time (and I have a Ukrainian grandma so I know my perogies)!

Guests + Photography

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

It is important that guests be guests, not photographers. We all know guests mean well, but as you can see in the two photos below, they have ruined the bride’s photos.

This professional photographer’s, who I can tell you takes beyond amazing photos, however, photos are unrecoverable (even in the beloved photoshop) because the guests were using their digital cameras. The first one was because of someone’s flash and the second you notice the bright orange dot on the brides head – also from a guest’s digital camera.

Ensure the money that you paid for a photographer yields the more usable photos and photo times by excluding guests. Ensure guests are told beforehand by the minister/officiant/priest/father that “no photos are allowed during the ceremony at all unless you are the professional photographer“. Another tip is to ensure guests do not follow you to formals (especially if at the same location as the ceremony). They, again, mean well but they take up valuable time and interfere with the hired photographer.

Featured in Weddings In Alberta

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

We are delighted to say that Caitlin and Will’s fabulous wedding from May is featured in the August issue of Weddings in Alberta.

Below is a photo by Romy Young of the reception, all though Erik Hornung was the bride’s photographer, Romy came by and snapped a few photos of the set up we worked so diligently on. You will want to check out the fabulous photos in the magazine of the beautiful bride and her handsome groom. It was an absolute pleasure to work on this wedding.

Tips for a successful Candy Table

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

I am a fan of Candy Buffets, probably because I have a big sweet tooth. We had one our wedding over four years ago, before it was a trend (I think of myself as a trend setter). Here are a few tips on how to set up your Candy Buffet to ensure it looks fantastic and is a huge hit with guests.

Personally I like monochromatic. However, it doesn’t have to be to look good. Take a look at this example. It works well because it has a backdrop, labels, and varying levels for the display.

A beautiful candy buffet/table has height, texture and most importantly decor. You can’t forget this table and just let it be. If you want it to be a huge hit, ensure it stands out and is enticing. Food is ALL about presentation.

Boxes or bags, this will allow for guests to take the candy home or to their table, and they look cute.

A good way to add height is to find a bunch of books or a box and wrap them up in wrapping paper or fabric that is a contrasting color to the beautiful linen you have chosen. In the image below, there is fantastic presentation, they created a second row in the back for height and the backdrop has detail and texture.

Don’t forget to label your candy. Not only is it for presentation, but it prevents waste from people ‘trying candy’ and of course allergies. It’s always good to know what you’re selecting.

Also don’t forget something to select candy with – i.e. scoops or tongs. Not only for hygienic reasons but so I can get more than one jelly bean in my bag.

As for how much. Well that’s the million dollar question. As long as you have a good variety and a decent amount you should be fine. Remember not all of your guests will indulge. Though I recommend ensuring you have lots of the candy you like so you have left overs.

Finally if you want to make your table stand out and be the talk of the town, have a nostalgic candy that is hard to find. Mojos. Enough said. They were my favorite by far, and they are impossible to find. We had them for our wedding and we weren’t left with any and I think I had 5-10lbs of the little delights.

The Master of Ceremonies

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

(photo: Erik Hornung, Caitlin + Will’s wedding)

The MC is an extremely important job, you need one, a good one. The MC is someone who keeps the night rolling and people entertained. I have seen my fair share of MC’s fabulous and not so fabulous. You need someone who is a natural comedian, someone who knows the couple, or enjoys being in front of crowds.

The MC’s job usually begins around 6:15 (based on a 5:30 cocktail, 6:30 B + G arrival) they want to announce themselves with a simple hellos my name is ____ and I will be your MC for the evening and I will let you know our program will be beginning in approximately 15 minutes (granted the B + G are on time), please grab your drinks and take a seat. This does need to be done 15 minutes in advance it allows for a pee/smoke break/grab a drink.

The MC then announces the bridal party and welcomes them – now this can be done several ways,  something you need to discuss beforehand with your bridal party. Does everyone want to come in, is each couple/person announced or just “please welcome the bridal party”, or just the Bride and Groom? You also want to figure out if you go around the room, are doing something completely different, or  just go to your seats.

Usually this is followed by a basic welcome and grace. After/during dinner the MC provides a bit of comic entertainment and welcomes/introduces the speeches. He or she will keep the program going and if something goes array (i.e. slideshow) they will keep the crowd entertained or go onto the next item. They MC’s duties usually ends at the first dance and the DJ/Band takes over – that’s up to you.

It is my advice that you limit your MC to two drinks during their duties – I understand needing one to ‘calm the nerves’ but sometimes they go a little too far in calming the nerves. (I haven’t seen it at any of my weddings but I have been to some as a guest where I have seen it)
