I receive a lot of questions about how much time is required to plan a wedding. Really, you don’t need much time at all. So if you were recently engaged and would like to get married this year, don’t worry you have time. As long as you don’t have your heart set on a specific date and venue you should be okay. You need to first start with priorities, if you have always known you will be married in the Basilica and it’s only available on June 2 at 3 p.m. you may need to be a little bit flexible with the rest of your planning. If you don’t have your heart set on anything you shouldn’t have a problem at all.
1. Set your priorities and budget, and vision
2. Select a Ceremony and Reception Venue + Date
3. Start booking all your vendors (the ones that can only book one wedding a weekend are where you want to start i.e. photographers/planners) and order you dress – it takes up to six months to order!
Keep in mind the busy months for wedding are June, July, August, and September, if you have a wedding in one of the less popular months you will be able to have the venues and vendors you want!

A frequent question brides ask me is, “do all my tables have to have the same centerpiece?” Absolutely not! In fact it can save you some money, as well, it adds a visual interest to the room and can be a fantastic conversation starter for you guests.

Eco friendly weddings don’t have to be expensive; in fact, they can be quite the opposite! You don’t need to go and buy new things made out of recycle product to be eco friendly, here are a few suggestions on how to make you wedding eco friendly and uber chic:
- Find a venue that allows you to have the ceremony and reception on the same site, that way guests don’t have to drive.
- Have more of an eclectic wedding and don’t worry if all the vases aren’t the same. Go to a second hand store and buy vases or to a antique store to purchase some – or even, my favorite go garage saleing!
- Use recycled paper for your invitations. It’s not hard to find anymore, and comes in array of colors and textures.
- Create a wedding website instead of having several inserts.
- Use local vendors; don’t fly a photographer in from Toronto for your Edmonton wedding.
- Edible or Plant favors. These are more eco friendly as most guests will use them, plus they weren’t shipped from across the world and made in a polluting factory.
- Have group transportation for photos, to and from the reception. This is fabulous especially if your reception is in a little known location.
- Rent or buy and resell items instead of having single use items (i.e cutlery, glasses)
- Make stuff. Plain and simple instead of buying your escort cards/décor/table numbers/favors make them. You might not be able to make everything but a little bit of a personal touch goes a long way.
- Have a smaller wedding.

$12. Yes you read that right, $12 whole dollars for this centerpiece. All you need to do is think outside the box and do lots of shopping! I found this vase at Dollaramma for $2, and the flowers my husband bought me for $10. It is beautiful and simple, you can have real flowers on a budget. Now that being said you could probably find less expensive flowers or the same flowers for less money depending on the season!

Well a couple of weeks ago I meandered into my favorite store Ikea. We all know the classic $1.99 vase that appear at quite a few weddings but what else do they have to offer? Tons. I found so many cute little items that could make their way into your beautiful wedding.
How about these little lanterns? They would make a beautiful aisle, or center piece. How about in a row lining a shelf, alternating with some small vases with single stems? So chic, simple, and in expensive! ($3.99 CAN)

These are some absolutely adorable little vases that I had to keep from making their way into my basket. They come in some fun colors too! Cluster three together in the centre of a table with different colored flowers. Simple and again so beautiful!

There are also these small bowls found in the kitchen section that come in the same white, green, and I thought I had seen them in a dark purple that could easily serve as a vase for a floating flower. If you have rectangle tables place these in-between larger arrangements that run down the middle or candles.

And how about using something a little bit more unique than your standard clear tea light holder. They have super fun colors and designs in that could brighten up your evening. Ikea tea lights.

A very controversial topic, and understandably so. There are so many different situations where people would consider a cash bar an option. However, think about this: would you go to a friend’s house and pay for a drink at dinner?
There are some extremely affordable options available to cut the costs of a true full open bar. Here are seven suggestions on ways to cut costs on the bar.
1. Only have wine on the tables, no bar.
2. Don’t put the wine on the tables unless someone asks for a bottle.
3. Don’t put both red and white out.
4. Have a limited bar. Only serve beer, wine, and vodka; beer & wine; beer & adult punch etc.
5. Limit the time that your bar is open. Only have your bar open from cocktails till 9 p.m.
6. Have a themed bar – a martini bar.
7. Have your wedding reception on a weekday or during the day, people tend to drink less than on a Saturday night.
