What is a stylized shoot?
Well, it’s kind of like a themed engagement session. Depending on the theme chosen by the lucky winner, various props and displays will be set up and used with the photos.

Amber + Ryan were married on October 6th at the Edmonton Delta South, in the Crystal Gallery, and their reception was held at the Top of the Inn. They had a beaufitufl wedding filled with a beautiful deep shade of aubergine, silver, and lots of bling!

Pinterest: A Curse and a Blessing

I have a huge love for Pinterest, as I see more weddings, more tips and recipes than I would have otherwise. But that’s part of the problem with Pineterest, from the wedding side of things (I’ve also heard the same thing about the new perception of being a Super Mom)

Most brides to be have a general idea of what they would like to have for a wedding, but then Pinterest comes along and changes their minds. A few times. Okay, a hundred times.

You need to decide early on what you general theme is going to be, modern, vintage, elegant? What colours would you like to see? Why? Because everything you pick from your dress to your stationery should reflect this choice.

So while pinning you keep in mind:

1. Keep a consistent theme going, weed out the old pins that no longer reflect your vision
2. Use photos as Inspiration, don’t intend to copy.
3. Try a project out a LONG time before the wedding, otherwise you will forget about it, and trust me, last minute DIY does not work out.
4. Just because she had it doesn’t mean it’s available here. Yes, in Alberta we are limited. Especially when it comes to flowers.
5. Write in the pin why you liked it, i.e. I like the font in this invitation.

When I have clients with lots of pins, they become very overwhelmed and don’t know where they are going with all these pins. There are TONS of beautiful and unique wedding ideas out there, you don’t need them all to make your wedding perfect. Your wedding is about two people who fell in love and want to be married, and if that’s the only thing that happens that day then it was a success. Your guests are there to visit, and see you laugh, cry, and smile.

Tip: Holding Your Bouquet

Well, I’ll admit it, this is my biggest pet peeve and I sit watching wedding shows talking at the TV for someone to lower their bouquets. I end up telling to my husband over and over again how silly they look and they are going to regret covering their faces and dresses with their bouquets. As you can see in the photo below, you need to hold the bouquet lower; your thumbs should be at your belly button and your bouquet turned forward slightly – we don’t want to see the stems.

Save the Date Etiquette
Upon embarking on the wedding planning process, you’ll be exposed to a whole slew of bridal stationery do’s and don’ts. However, there is one piece of wedding correspondence that won’t burden you with an excessive amount of grueling etiquette requirements, i.e., save the dates. And since these early reminders are only meant to provide a little teaser of what’s in store, you’re not bound by any rigid rules. Instead you can express your creativity on these cards however you’d like. So whether you want your save the dates to be fun and unique or even a little silly, feel free to let your personality shine through. Plus, the etiquette requirements are so relaxed that you can forego those traditional cards in favor of stylish save the date magnets. And the more budget conscious brides can even take it one step further by losing the envelope altogether and simply mailing chic save the date postcards.

But keep in mind that there are a few simple guidelines which should be followed. First and foremost, you’ll want to send these early reminders at least 6-8 months in advance of the upcoming wedding so that your guests will have enough time to make travel arrangements. This is especially important if you’re planning a destination wedding because it’ll give everyone the opportunity to book flights before prices go up. Also, you should only send them to people who will definitely be invited the wedding. So make sure you take the time to finalize the guest list before mailing out your save the dates in order to avoid hurting anyone’s feelings if they don’t receive a formal invitation later on.

Now you’re probably asking yourself, “But what should I put on these cards?” Well you can’t “save the date” without an actual date, right? So of course you’ll need to include information about when and where your wedding will be. Or even if you haven’t booked a venue yet, you can just put down a general location so that guests have an idea of where it’ll be held. And last but not least, make sure you include a fabulous engagement photograph of you and your fiancé so that loved ones can see those sparkling smiles displayed front and center.

Stunning Orange + Navy Tablescape

We were asked to create another tablescape for photographers to learn how to take photos from the fantastic photographers Ryan + Beth, We came up with a Orange + Navy theme, which kind of feels tropical with the choice of flowers (orchids, pincushion protea, calla lilies). Beautiful acrylic chairs from Special Event Rentals were used to create a light airy feel that doesn’t take away from the setting. I created some custom napkins out of some phenomenal navy and white fabric. Just love that pattern! Our model couple was one of past clients from 2012, Emily + Darryl. She looked absolutely stunning in a gown from Delica Bridal.

July 28: Kristie + Patrick

Kristie and Patrick had a lovely wedding ceremony and reception at the Delta South in Edmonton. It was filled with beautiful purple and bright green details. My personal favourite was the ceremony location. As most of the guests were form out of town it was important that the ceremony and reception be in the same location, the Crystal Gallery at the Delta South provided a lovely setting for the beautiful couple. They had some beautiful dendrobium orchids for centeprieces and a small cake with hand made cymbidium orchids with lots of cupcakes for the guests.

Bird Photoshoot

One of my favourites things in life are birds. I have two parrots and have always enjoyed watching birds, they are very smart little creatures. JFY Photography + Picture That Photography had approached me early this spring giving me a vague color pallet and an idea for a photoshoot and asked if I was interested. Naturally of course I was, I love birds and the color aqua. So here’s what came out of that shoot with PinkPolka Design, Akiko Floral Artistry, and Bluebird Cakes.

You’re Engaged Now What?

Most brides take the first opportunity to go to the dress store and forget the basics. When planning such an important event there are a few things you need to look at before ever stepping in a dress store.

First think of the kind of wedding the two of you want. Is it local, destination, large, small etc. (you don’t need to determine colors or theme but a general idea of your wedding).

Second set your priorities for the wedding – is it the budget, venue, dress, photos, food, number of guests? If you have your heart set on a certain venue, and their capacity is only 150 or their minimum is $18,000 you may need to reconsider a few items.

The third thing you need to sit down and look at before hiring anyone or even looking at those dresses, is BUDGET. The first two steps coincide with the budget. Unfortunately you cannot have a princess wedding, with 300 guests on a $10,000 budget. You also need to discuss upfront with the parents or anyone else involved if they will be contributing.

Once the budget, priorities, and vision have been discussed you can go dress, venue, photographer, etc. shopping. If you don’t do these steps first you will only cause yourself frustration, and possibly hurt your budget.

Favourite Wedding Apps

I love technology and I have a love for making my life easier not harder. Thus I had to share three of my favourite wedding apps with you, so here they are.

Appy Couple, Free
In place of the wedding website, it’s an app with information and photos you would have included on a website. Your story, events, key people, news, and registry are just a few items on this app for your guests to go through. It makes connecting with your guests even easier.

The Seating Planner, $0.99
An essential for any wedding. It allows you to put all your guest names in, and move your guests from table to table, selecting your table sizes etc. You can also enter meals and any other details required. It will make your seat planning much easier.

Instagram, Free
It’s free and most people already have it. Lots of brides want to see photos form their guests’ point of view and there’s no easier way than to have everyone post them to instagram with your own hashtag.
